We are sure taking the internet for granted these days. Just a few days ago I was on my hands and knees on a concrete sidewalk, moving my laptop hither and yon, to keep the sun off the screen and trying to get my mouse to work on the pebbled surface. All this was to get a decent enough internet connection to send an email home. (I was trying to get close enough to the free wi fi at a nearby resort while docked at harbor). A couple walked by me and asked if I had lost a contact lens.
As I have been finding my way as a sailorette and the cook aboard Aleydabeth, I notice myself finding comfort in the very same things that I find comfort in when I am ashore. I am nesting, trying to turn the boat into my home. I was remarking just yesterday that the table needed a centerpiece, a bowl of fruit or something. The men just howled. Tony could envision the plastic fruit, all glued into place and permanently fixed to the centre of the table at a 45 degree angle as Aleydabeth was heeled over in the wind. Needless to say I abandoned that one.
The other night I was suggesting that candlelight might go well with the Enya music that was playing soothingly at the end of the provisioning day. Somehow the red night lights of the cabin don't quite create the same ambience. I appreciate her tidy, and am finding a rhythm now, working in the small galley, and finding places in the stateroom for my things. I recognize that when I make my way down the steps of the companionway and descend into the warmth of the cabin, I have come home. |
