Lark and RV in mountain pass between Kananaskis and Nanton, AB.
We have enjoyed a June of land adventures in Alberta. The weather has not been fully cooperative. It has rained a lot, and on an occasion or two, it has even snowed! We are hopeful that the July long weekend and Canada Day will bring us some warmth and sunshine.
Michelle and Kevin in Kananaskis.
We started out in the RV in Calgary- at our daughter Michelle's home and tried to intelligently outfit our new home. This took a few trips back and forth to the storage locker, until we knew what we needed and didn't really need. My wardrobe choices weren't great. I was thinking Arizona not Alaska.
We spent our first weekend together in Sundre with Lyle's cousin Jeff and his wife Karen. We were joined by friends, and family, Shirley and Carol, and had a wonderful time camped in the RV campground on the Little Red River. The bonfires were spectacular, and the food and drink great! What a great introduction to RV life.

Kevin and Michelles RV at Kananaskis.
We spent two weeks in the Okotoks municipal site and completed a lot of business in and around Calgary. We enjoyed visiting with the family, sharing Michelle's birthday celebration and got reacquainted with Jeremy, and Lori and the kids. We even had a great dinner with Kevin Balmer who was in Calgary on business for a few days.
Dwight and Mary Ellen spent an evening around our little campfire on their way home to the island. Gosh it was good to see them again. I will miss having my big brother so close.
We headed into Kananaskis, and stayed at the Interlake campsite, where Michelle and Kevin joined us. It was a coooooold weekend, and we got snowed on. But, it is very beautiful and I was glad to be in the mountains again. We have explored a few campsites in the Kananaskis area now, and are planning on returning to a few of them over the next weeks

Canmore, Alberta
Canmore was a disappointment and the accommodations were overpriced and oversold. We only spent one night there before returning to the provincial parks.
Lyle's Workshop
Lyle has been working with quite a different woodworking workshop these days. He has become reacquainted with many of his hand tools, and managed to build us a great storage locker in the front of the fifth wheel. It doesn't matter where we park, he seems able to find a project to keep him busy. Of course sometimes those projects aren't just good ideas! In Fort MacLeod we had a water fitting leak and soaked the carpet, prompting a few repairs and a fan purchase to dry everything out. I can see that maintaining the RV may keep Lyle busy.
We traveled out of Kananaskis Park over a high mountain pass (not recommended for trailers). It was spectacular scenery though and reminded me of the high views of our youth in 4 wheel drive days in Kakwa country. My knuckles were white by the end and I was glad to arrive in Chain Lakes campground.
We spent a few days in Southern Alberta, and visited Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, near Fort MacLeod. It poured rain most of the time, but cleared long enough for us to take a hike under the cliff. The archeological history here is amazing, tracing aboriginal civilizations back 9000 years. The museum site is well done also, camouflaging into the surrounding hillside and offering great narrative histories of how the buffalo were lured over the cliffs and used for food and survival, all before the introduction of horses to North America.
We traveled to Lethbridge to escape a rainy day and marveled at the railway tressel bridge, while stocking up on "necessities" at the local Canadian Tire.
Today we are parked in Black Diamond, "oil and cowboy country", close to where Lyle was born and spent the first 5 years of his life. We are beside the Sheep River, and will stay a few days until we pick up our grandson, Kaden for the long weekend.
